From Historic Settlements to Smart Energy Systems: Exploring Vienna’s Sustainable Urban Future

As part of the international PED StepWise project meeting in Vienna, participants explored several urban development areas in the city’s 22nd district. In the video, Georg Wolfmayr talks about the different sites visited during the excursion and explains how they reflect changing approaches to urban development and energy supply.

At the historic Kriegerheimstätte settlement, the focus was on the challenge of replacing fossil-based heating systems with future-oriented solutions such as a possible anergy network. The tour continued through post-war municipal housing areas to Berresgasse, a modern, largely car-free development with around 3,000 new apartments and shared community spaces designed to strengthen neighborhood life. The final stop was Campo Breitenlee, where an advanced predictive energy management system is being tested to optimize building energy use based on weather forecasts. Together, the sites illustrated both the long history of Vienna’s energy cultures and the importance of adapting existing urban spaces for a sustainable future.
