In this blog post, we would like to introduce you to the“PED StepWise“ research project as part of Driving Urban Transitions (DUT).Eileen Stephan from realitylab briefly presents the project in this video:
Europe is built. We have about 2% new construction per year compared to existing buildings. Decarbonising existing buildings and neighbourhoods is a challenge for several reasons: different stakeholders, proper timing, available space on site, etc.
PED StepWise is developing a step-by-step process that reflects the „messy“ reality of the situation in existing neighbourhoods and the need to be „wise“ in developing a PED (positive energy district). By „wisely“ we mean a process that is knowledge-based, participatory, holistic and inclusive, addressing not only technical issues but working with citizens and other stakeholders to create zero-emission places . From a smart grid to a wise grid.
Our goal is to create a better and more inclusive transformation process that works for existing districts and neighbourhoods, while responding to the needs and aspirations of stakeholders and enabling decarbonisation and PED standards.
The objectives are a) the development and b) the demonstration of a better and smarter process leading to the implementation of innovative strategies for (local) renewable energy production, energy flexibility, energy efficiency and sustainable, low-carbon mobility in districts in order to achieve a climate-neutral PED.
The proposed process will be tested in three districts and consists of a process map for implementation to achieve decarbonised, energy-positive existing districts and neighbourhoods.
